Through its grant-making program, Episcopal Charities supports a variety of nonprofit agencies and parish outreach initiatives with their efforts to make a crucial difference to those in need in the Bay Area. Below is a summary of Episcopal Charities' seven grant programs.
Operating Grants for Partner Agencies
Episcopal Charities awards annual grants to each of its qualified Partner Agencies in support of each agency's programs, including general agency operations. Grants from Donor Advised Funds to Partner Agencies are in addition to Episcopal Charities' annual grant programs.
Request for Proposals (RFP)s are mailed in December and due back by January 31 of the following year.
Discretionary Grants for Partner Agencies and Parish Incubators.
Episcopal Charities supports new parish ministries (incubators) with small cash grants and with in-kind grants of organizational, community-organizing and development consulting services. The grant application is available online below. Grant requests may be submitted any time and are reviewed on a rotating basis.
Episcopal Charities will fund only Episcopal congregation outreach programs which are located within the Diocese of California. To qualify, an incubator must either be new or in its infancy (no more than five years old) and have a mission which is consistent with Episcopal Charities' mission.

Endowment Grants Restricted to Specific Social Ministries for Partner Agencies, Parishes, and Commissions of the Diocese.
Each year, Episcopal Charities is able to spend the net appreciation of the assets over the historic dollar value in each of the Social Ministry Endowment Funds. EC invites parishes, commissions and social welfare agencies that have a relationship with the Diocese of California and other Episcopal entities to submit a proposal for the distribution of these funds. Areas of restriction include AIDS, Jail Ministry, Recovery, and General Purposes.

This fund was established in the name of Bishop Swing, who led the diocese with his commitment to serving those in need. The project or program serves the disadvantaged and underserved.

Walk-A-Thon Parish Outreach Grants
Episcopal Charities encourages parishes to participate in the annual October Walk-A-Thon. When 12 or more members of the parish walk, the parish will receive a rebate of 25% of the money they raise for use in their own parish outreach programs.
Donor Advised Funds
These grants are given to Partner Agencies, Parishes, and Episcopal entities. Applications are not solicited and there is no grant application.
Episcopal Charities awards grants from Donor Advised Funds, giving careful consideration to recommendations made by donors. In addition, Episcopal Charities provides the advisors of Donor Advised Funds with information regarding special needs for funding within the social service network in the Diocese of California. Fifty percent of the distribution from each fund must go to an Episcopal entity. The balance can be directed to nonprofits which meet the criteria established by the Internal Revenue Code.
Darby Betts Fund
This fund is restricted to senior programs in parishes only. In 2006 Episcopal Charities partnered with Episcopal Senior Communities aka Episcopal Homes Foundation to administer the Darby Betts Fund, a grant program that supports senior programs of the Dioceses of California, Northern California, and El Camino Real. Over $49,000 in funds were disbursed in 2007 to support senior housing, nutrition, and healthcare. RFPs are sent out each year in March to all parishes in the Diocese of California and are due back by April of the same year.
