What we do: Our mission is to make a crucial difference in the lives of the poor, oppressed and endangered individuals and families in the Bay Area, regardless of their religious affiliation or practice.
- We meet our mission through the power of multiple donors, the power of charity, to address the needs of the poor.
- Our vision is to build a community of givers, to serve this community in need.
- Episcopal Charities' goal is to help needy individuals with a hand up - not a hand out.
How we do it: We make annual grants to support both large agencies that were established through the Episcopal Church and small incubator parish outreach programs.
- We give grants for general operations to our partner agencies that serve over 45,000 people a year.
- We give grants to parish outreach programs to encourage and support new ideas and passions of parishioners to help others.
- We provide workshops to parish outreach workers.
- We provide educational symposia on issues of communities in need.
Who we serve: Examples of our grant making.
- Episcopal Community Services - is a large, multi-facility homeless services agency that serves over 4500 homeless men and women a year. They also provide needed training services through the skills center and the CHEFs program.
- Ohlhoff Recovery Programs - provides residential and outpatient services to men, women and teens with addiction and eating disorders.
- St. Dorothy's Rest - provides support for the annual summer health camp that allows children with life threatening illnesses go to camp for free.
- The Welcome Ministry at St. Luke's church, SF - a parish outreach program that works in partnership with Old First Presbyterian church to provide case management and hot meals to the homeless.
Most Frequently Asked Question:
Why shouldn't I give directly to the Episcopal agency instead of through Episcopal Charities?
Our answer is: If you as a donor have a long standing relationship with a particular agency, then by all means, give directly to that agency. On the other hand, Episcopal Charities is here to help you extend the reach of your philanthropy by impacting a variety of community needs. Episcopal Charities guides donors by providing information about community agencies and parish outreach programs, pooling unrestricted gifts to make a bigger impact, and conducting customized research based on donor interests in particular areas of need. Donors who are unsure about where their gift will do the most good can confidently give through EC and be certain that their gift reaches those most in need.
