Fall 2005 Symposium for Jail and Prison Ministries

Saturday, September 10, 2005
Grace Cathedral

With the California Prison System in flux, the Jail and Prison Ministries of our parishes offer opportunities for each of us to make a significant difference in the lives of inmates, their families and the communities that surround them. Episcopal Charities sponsored this symposium to explore what these ministries do, and what the future holds for expanding or creating new programs.

Our guest speaker was Sunny Schwartz, Program Administrator for the SF Sheriff's Department where she directs the design and operation of prisoner programs in six San Francisco county jails which house a daily average of 2,700 men and women prisoners. She discussed how she has brought a vision of Restorative Justice to the SF Jails through RSVP, Resolve to Stop the Violence Program. Sunny has appeared on the Discovery Channel, PBS, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Larry King Live Show to represent RSVP and to provide frank and bold discussion for alternative approaches to the traditional criminal justice system.
